Nyarugenge Prison receives support from MIDIMAR.

Kigali, December 27, 2016 - The Minister of Refugees and Disaster Management (MIDIMAR), Honorable Mukantabana Seraphine visited Nyarugenge Prison in Kigali, to offer support to inmates who lived in the ward that was gutted by fire on December 25, 2016.  

The 171 inmates affected by the fire received basic items such as blankets, mats, jerrycans, buckets, soap, plates and cups amounting to four and a half million Rwandan francs.

The Minister stated that this was immediate assistance given to inmates and more would be distributed following detailed assessment of damages caused.

 “We have distributed immediate assistance and thereafter a team will come to asses in detail together with the prisons authorities, what has been destroyed and thereafter we will offer what is needed,” the Minister said.

The Commissioner General of Rwanda Correctional Service, CGP George Rwigamba expressed his appreciation to the Ministry for responding to the disaster by distributing the much needed items to the inmates. He said there would be sensitizations and trainings to inmates on how to avoid any such incidences from happening in the future.
